# Goals & Measurement

A strategy needs one clear objective and an honest way to know if it's working. This is where
brands go wrong by chasing follower counts that never translate into anything.

## Pick one primary objective (from what the business needs)

Social can serve different objectives; pick **one** primary (plus at most one secondary), driven
by the business's actual stage and need:

- **Awareness / reach** — get discovered. (Early brands, new products.)
- **Audience growth** — build an owned following to nurture.
- **Community / engagement** — deepen the relationship with existing followers.
- **Authority / positioning** — become the name people associate with the topic.
- **Leads** — capture interest (email, demo, DM, waitlist).
- **Sales / conversion** — drive purchases directly.

The objective should map to the business: a pre-product startup usually needs awareness and
audience; an established business with a funnel usually needs leads or sales. Don't default to
"more followers" — ask what the *business* needs social to do.

## Meaningful metrics vs vanity metrics

Choose the metric that reflects the objective, and distrust the ones that just feel good:

| Vanity (often) | Meaningful (usually) |
|---|---|
| Follower count | Saves, shares/sends |
| Likes | Comments / DMs / replies |
| Impressions alone | Profile visits → clicks |
| "Going viral" once | Leads, sign-ups, sales, repeat reach |

Followers and likes matter only if they ladder up to the objective. A post with 200 saves and 10
DMs usually beats one with 5,000 likes and no action. Pick a primary metric that would actually
move the business.

## The funnel reality — social warms, it rarely closes

Social media mostly **warms** people through awareness → trust → consideration, and the
conversion often happens elsewhere (site, email, DMs, sales call). So:

- Don't judge a single post by direct sales; judge the *body of work* by the trust and demand it
  builds.
- Match the metric to where the channel sits in the funnel — awareness content is measured by
  reach/saves, not purchases.
- A "conversion" goal still needs upper-funnel content feeding it.

## Honest measurement

**WoopSocial publishes (measurement: the platforms' native analytics).** Measurement is
**platform-native and manual** — read each platform's own insights, track your primary metric in
a simple sheet, and review periodically. Set targets, but:

- Don't promise dashboards or automated reporting the product can't deliver.
- Be wary of obsessing over numbers week to week; social compounds over months. Set a cadence to
review (e.g., monthly) rather than chasing every post.
- To cascade the objective into SMART targets, per-channel North Stars, and action thresholds,
  hand off to `goals-and-kpis`.

## A simple goal statement

Write the objective as one line the whole strategy serves:

> "Over the next quarter, social exists to **{objective}**, measured primarily by **{metric}**,
> on **{channel(s)}**."

Everything else — pillars, plan, cadence — should be in service of that sentence.
