Brief and identity rules govern captions, music, CTA, loops, runtime and production consent. None of these are universal requirements. WATCH is a writing method, not evidence of audience performance.
W — Win the opening
Choose an observable event that earns curiosity, tension or recognition. Prepare 3–5 real alternative openers: first frame, performed action, words (or none), sound, duration and bridge into the body. Change the staging or entry point as well as the language. Keep every alternative true to the same payoff. Use hook-writer for comparison. When text is forbidden, use action/composition and sound as allowed; a muted-comprehension check must not silently change a spoken-dialogue format.
A — Advance causally
Map desire → action → consequence → payoff. Review the payoff board and late cast before opening motion. Let a cold reader explain the chain from the boards without the author's pitch; record the actual answer or mark that review pending. If the action does not cause the consequence, revise it.
Each shot needs initial state → dominant action → completed end state. Choose cuts for a reason: coverage, viewpoint, space, time or an intentional transformation. A continuous physical action needs time and evidence of completion; a generic “cut every few seconds” rule must not sever it.
T — Time action and sound
Budget anticipation, contact, movement, completion and reaction. Time natural dialogue, pauses and speaker changes separately, then align compatible overlaps. Dialogue that requires a character to finish swallowing, turning or crossing a threshold cannot borrow that action's time. Extend runtime, add motivated coverage, or simplify the approved premise rather than speed through required beats.
C — Cash the promise
Plan the visible payoff, its required cast and its named speaker. Check cast identity, action completion, speaker/source, possession and payoff as critical requirements; keep unknowns unknown. No budget or review-round limit makes a failed board ready for motion. An incorrect still requires a revised still and matching review, not a longer negative motion prompt.
H — Hold the ending
Give the audience time to read what changed and the response it produces. A resolved standalone ending
needs no CTA, loop or sequel hook. Where requested, a continuation hook opens a new question after
paying off this one. Route platform adaptation to reels-script, tiktok-script or youtube-shorts.
