Watch time, completion, and rewatches are the FYP's top signals — so the hook and the retention design are where a TikTok is won or lost. This is the craft layer.
The first second
You have ~1 second to stop the scroll, and ~3 to convince them to stay. Fire on three channels at once:
- Verbal hook — the first words out of your mouth (or the voiceover's). No preamble.
- On-screen text hook — a bold text line that states the stakes/curiosity (also caught by sound-off viewers).
- Visual hook — motion, a striking first frame, a pattern interrupt (do something unexpected in frame).
Pull the hook mechanism from hook-writer. Banned openings: "Hey guys," a logo/intro card, a slow
pan, "In this video I'm going to…". Start in the action or the claim.
Hook angles that work on TikTok
- The bold claim / contrarian — "Your most-requested feature is the one to delete."
- The open loop — "I lost $40k learning this. Here's the 20-second version."
- The result / number — "We went from 0 to 10k users with one boring button."
- The callout — "If you run a SaaS, stop doing this."
- The POV / relatable — "POV: the feature everyone begged for, that nobody used."
- The "wait for it" — promise a payoff that requires watching to the end (loop fuel).
Whatever the angle, it must be true — no clickbait the video doesn't pay off. A betrayed hook tanks watch time on the next video too (TikTok learns).
Retention design — keep them to the end
- No intro tax. The value starts at second 0. Cut anything before the hook.
- Fast pace. Tight cuts, no dead air, no rambling. Trim every pause.
- Open loops. Pose the question early, answer it late ("the third one surprised me").
- Re-hook mid-video. A second curiosity bump around the middle for longer videos.
- Front-load value, but hold one payoff for the end to pull completion.
- Captions/on-screen text keep sound-off viewers in.
Design for the rewatch / loop
Rewatches are one of the most powerful signals, and the most underused lever:
- Seamless loop — end the video so the last frame/line flows back into the first, so it replays without a seam. The viewer watches twice before realizing.
- The rewatch trigger — a detail, a fast line, or a "did you catch…" that rewards (and invites) a second watch.
- Density — pack enough that one watch isn't enough to absorb it (great for listicles/tips).
Retention killers (cut these)
- A slow or branded intro.
- Burying the point ("so basically, what happened was, um…").
- Dead air / long pauses / filler.
- A hook the video doesn't deliver.
- Reading a script stiffly — TikTok rewards energy and a real person.
The measurable check
A good TikTok script can answer: what's the 1-second hook (all three channels)? where's the open loop? what's the loop/rewatch trigger? is there any dead air? If the hook is weak or the loop is missing, fix those before anything else.
